HAPPY CHINESE NEAR YEAR!
While Jonathan was in the air heading our way, John and I took to the streets to immerse ourselves with the locals. Our first stop was Sogo Komplex. Why oh why did I not take any photos? We discovered that Sogo was just a huge department store, much like our Macy’s or Dillard’s. But what made it so fantastic was the number of people shopping (scavenging) for Chinese New Year bargains! bargains. Throughout the store, on every level, there were racks of clothing on hangers, and clothing folded in piles (not for long), marked down like 89-90%, with scores of women and men searching for the perfect (cheapest) item to purchase!
We took a minute to sit down in the food court there, so John could have lunch. All I wanted was a black coffee. We have learned that black coffee is not very popular over here. However, if you say “coffee O” (and if it is your lucky day), you might just get a cup of black coffee. Today was NOT my lucky day!
Signs like this were EVERYWHERE today, “Happy Chinese New Year!”
Once outside Sogo, we walked around Chow Kit. We found a food market, a “wet” market (fish—can you say STINKY), and many stands set up selling everything and anything you would EVER need!
First (and foremost), we FINALLY found a dark chocolate 85% Cocoa bar! Chocolate is sold everywhere in KL—but this was the FIRST time we found a really dark chocolate bar! πππ
Next, John found a bright purple toaster, for under $8.00!!! (Take that, John Inderstrodt! Let us know if you would like us to send a few home for you! Purple or Red—your choice!) πππ
As I mentioned, Jonathan was on his way over for a visit! Won’t he be surprised by the “welcome gift” we picked up for him — a battery operated razor we purchased for $7.00! (John Inderstrodt—our offer still holds for this one too! ) πππ
Before we picked Jonathan up at the airport, we had a “mini Middle East” reunion. A friend from Dubai hooked us up with a friend she met while living in Doha who is currently living here in Kuala Lumpur!
John and I arrived a bit early for dinner, so we enjoyed a glass of wine and soaked up the atmosphere at KLCC (KL City Center), the area surrounding the base of the Petronas Towers, before meeting Shriani. The entire area was bustling with people in celebration mode! It was fun to watch!
We met up with Shriani at a wonderful restaurant called MammaSan. Both the restaurant AND Shriani were a delight! Thanks, Gill, for making this happen!

We browsed into a store called AJ Best Holdings, which boasted itself as being an “easy” place to shop! And it kind of was! John was a happy camper with all the necessities (deals) he found!

While everything is super inexpensive over here, one thing that IS NOT is suntan lotion! And it is so hard to find! And the tubes are so small! I purchased two, anticipating some pool time in the near future!

A perfect day ended in the perfect way with Jonathan arriving in Kuala Lumpur safely and soundly!
Let the good times roll!!! But first, we sleep! Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!
